One router setting can noticeably speed up 5GHz Wi-Fi — check 160MHz

If Wi-Fi works slower than it should, the problem may not be in the tariff or the router, but in the channel width. Transition from 80 to 160 MHz in the network 5 GHz is able to significantly increase the speed on compatible devices, especially with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7. How to enable 160 MHz on the router

The name of the parameter depends on the router manufacturer. In the wireless network settings 5 GHz search for one of the following:

  • Channel Width;
  • Bandwidth;
  • Channel Bandwidth;
  • channel width.

The greatest effect can be obtained if both the router and the client device support 160 MHz. The difference can be especially noticeable near the router, where the 5 GHz signal is strong enough. In such a situation, a wider channel allows better use of the capabilities of modern wireless equipment.

Why 160 MHz can degrade Wi-Fi

There is an important nuance: 160MHz doesn’t automatically mean better Wi-Fi. A wide channel occupies more radio frequency spectrum. In a private home with few neighboring networks, this may not pose a problem. But in a high-rise building, where dozens of routers work nearby, the situation is different. Due to mutual interference, 160 MHz can lead to:

  • less stable speed;
  • jump delay;
  • short-term breaks;
  • more frequent channel switching.

In such an environment 80 MHz may be more practicaleven if the maximum test speed will be lower. Therefore, it is worth changing the settings experimentally: compare both modes in your apartment or house.

What is DFS and why it can affect connections

Part of the 5 GHz channels belongs to the category DFS. They allow access to additional spectrum, but have special rules of operation. If the router detects a radar signal, it may be forced to change the channel. To the user, this sometimes looks like a sudden deterioration or short-term Wi-Fi interruption. Therefore, when testing 160 MHz, it is worth considering not only the speed indicator, but also the behavior of the network over a longer period of time.

The distance to the router also matters

Even the best configured 5GHz Wi-Fi has range limitations. Compared to 2.4 GHz, the 5 GHz band typically offers higher speeds, but is less effective at passing through walls and has a smaller effective coverage radius. Because of this 160 MHz may work great next to the router, but not much of an advantage in another room. That is, the result depends on several factors at once:

  • 160 MHz router support;
  • 160 MHz smartphone or laptop support;
  • signal level;
  • distances;
  • the number of nearby Wi-Fi networks;
  • used channel;
  • the presence of obstacles.

Do not rush to buy a new router

If you already have a router with Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 and a compatible smartphone or laptop, it is worth checking the channel width before buying new equipment. The change from 80 to 160 MHz does not cost anything, but under favorable conditions can allow you to make full use of the capabilities of your existing network. At the same time, it is not worth focusing only on the highest number in Speedtest. The best result will not be the maximum speed in one measurement, but stable connection with high speed and no latency spikes.
