Qualcomm sees 6G as the foundation of next-generation mobile networks

Qualcomm considers 6G as the next stage of mobile communication development, in which artificial intelligence will play a key role. The company works on AI-native network architecture and focuses on the emergence of the first commercial systems 6G in 2029.

Qualcomm wants to integrate artificial intelligence directly into 6G

The main difference in Qualcomm’s concept is that artificial intelligence should become part of the underlying 6G architecture, rather than a separate feature added to an off-the-shelf network. AI will be able to help manage data transfers, allocate network resources and adapt equipment to the current load. For example, the system will be able to take into account the number of active users and change network parameters to more efficiently use available resources. This approach can potentially help make connections more stable, reduce latency, and more efficiently serve large numbers of connected devices. However, the specific capabilities of future networks have not yet been determined. Claims of speed several times higher than 5G remain preliminary expectations. The final figures will depend on the technical standards, the frequency spectrum and the equipment used by the operators.

Qualcomm and China Mobile are testing 6G prototypes

The development of 6G is already beyond theoretical research. Qualcomm and China Mobile are testing prototypes of next-generation mobile communication technologies. Such tests make it possible to check the operation of individual components of future networks, evaluate their performance and identify technical problems that need to be eliminated before commercial launch. At the same time, testing prototypes does not mean that the finished technology already exists or will soon be available to ordinary users. The development of standards, larger-scale tests and preparation of the telecommunications infrastructure are still ahead.

When will 6G appear and will the networks launch in 2029

Qualcomm calls 2029 as the target year for the start of commercial 6G implementation. However, this does not mean that the new generation of communication will become available in most countries already then. To launch, operators will have to modernize base stations, transport networks and other equipment. In addition, it is necessary to agree on international standards so that devices from different manufacturers can work in compatible networks. For Ukraine, this also means that the emergence of 6G will depend not only on the readiness of Qualcomm technology, but also on the future decisions of operators and investments in telecommunications infrastructure.

How will 6G differ from 5G

For now, it is premature to compare the finished characteristics of the two generations. However, the Qualcomm concept outlines several areas of development:

  • Integrated artificial intelligence. AI should be involved in managing the network, not work only as an additional service.
  • Adaptive resource management. The network will be able to change the distribution of resources depending on the load.
  • A more stable connection. Optimizing network performance can potentially help maintain communication quality with a large number of connections.
  • Infrastructure development. The new generation will require compatible equipment, updated standards and modernization of operator networks.

Qualcomm determines the direction of mobile communication development

The AI-native approach shows the role Qualcomm assigns to artificial intelligence in future telecommunications systems. If this concept is implemented, AI will become one of the basic mechanisms of network management, and not just a tool for individual functions of smartphones. However, several stages of development and standardization still need to be completed before 6G can be commercially launched. Therefore, the year 2029 should be taken as Qualcomm’s target for now, and not as a guaranteed date for the mass launch of new generation networks.
