iOS 27 brought an updated version of Photographic Styles, but Apple limited the two new camera settings to the latest models. Functions Texture and Grain available on iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Older compatible iPhones got iOS 27, but they don’t have these two controls.
The limitation became apparent after Apple’s initial description gave the impression that the new Photographic Styles capabilities would be available to a wider range of models.
What is Texture and Grain in iOS 27
Both settings are a part Photographic Styles 3 and allow you to change the appearance of photos in more detail.
Texture allows you to change the character of the image, in particular soften the appearance of the skin or add certain visual effects. Grain adds grain to the photo, creating an effect similar to film photography. The user can adjust the intensity of these effects, so it’s not just ready-made filters. The settings allow you to more precisely control the result directly when working with Photographic Styles.
Which iPhones support the new settings
According to current Apple documentation, Texture and Grain available at:
- iPhone 18 Pro;
- iPhone 18 Pro Max;
- iPhone Duo.
Separately, Apple indicates these capabilities on the iPhone Duo page. The smartphone has a main and ultra-wide-angle camera of 48 MP, as well as a Center Stage front camera. Thus, the presence iOS 27 by itself does not guarantee access to all new Photographic Styles features.
Old iPhones still got Photographic Styles
The limitation concerns the new Texture and Grain parameters. Older compatible iPhone models continue to support Photographic Styles and can change parameters such as tone, color and intensity. That is, Apple did not remove Photographic Styles from older smartphones after updating to iOS 27. It’s just that the advanced tools for managing the appearance of photos became available only on newer devices. This is an important distinction, as users of older iPhones after installing iOS 27 can expect to see all the new Photographic Styles elements, but some of them will be missing.
Why did Apple limit the feature
Apple did not explain why Texture and Grain work only on new models. The company simply lists the compatible devices in its current documentation. Therefore, it is not necessary to claim that the limitation is related to the power of the processor, the camera, or some specific hardware component. For owners of older iPhones, the practical conclusion is simple: after updating to iOS 27, they get a new version of the system and Photographic Styles are available for their model, but Texture and Grain remain exclusive features of the new iPhones. If those two tools are what you need, Apple now officially lists support for iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo.
