The missing piece: The new iPad Pro lacks an always-on display

Apple recently debuted the new generation of iPads at the Let Loose event, showcasing updates to the iPad Air and iPad Pro, as well as a number of new accessories. Among the introduced innovations and features, many tech enthusiasts noted the absence of Always-on Display (AOD) functionality on the iPad Pro M4, despite its innovative OLED screen.

The inclusion of an OLED display in the iPad Pro is a significant step forward for Apple, which is moving away from the LCD or mini-LED technologies used in previous models. While this promises great picture quality with deeper blacks, a higher contrast ratio and potentially better battery life, the lack of AOD functionality has been a disappointment for many users who were expecting this feature with the technology switch.

While Samsung's Galaxy Tab lineup has long featured AOD, which provides users with important information on a low-power display, Apple's decision to remove the feature from the iPad Pro feels like a missed opportunity. Given the integration of AOD in the iPhone and the widespread use of OLED technology, its absence raises questions.

While the iPad Pro is expected to have both an OLED display and AOD functionality, excluding AOD is likely a deliberate choice by Apple. Rumors of a reduced refresh rate for AOD may not meet Apple's performance goals for the iPad Pro.

In contrast, the iPhone 14 Pro uses an LTPO panel, which allows you to use the AOD function with minimal power consumption. The new iPad Pro with a variable refresh rate may encounter problems in implementing the energy-efficient AOD function.

While the lack of AOD functionality in the current iPad Pro may raise questions, it does not rule out its inclusion in future models. Apple's focus on optimizing battery life and performance may explain this omission, but AOD's growing popularity as a user-friendly feature suggests that its appearance on the iPad Pro would not be a surprise.
